You are in a room with two doors. One leads to freedom and one leads to death. There are two guards — one always tells the truth and one always lies. You don't know which is which. You can ask one guard one question. What do you ask?
Common Wrong Answers
“Ask one guard, 'Which door leads to freedom?'”
This question is problematic because if you ask the truth-telling guard, he will point to the correct door, but if you ask the lying guard, he will point to the wrong door. You won't be able to determine which door is truly safe.
“Ask one guard, 'Are you the truth-teller?'”
This question does not help you identify the safe door. The truth-teller would say 'yes', and the liar would also say 'no', leaving you without useful information about the doors.
“Ask one guard, 'Which guard is the liar?'”
This question would yield confusing answers. The truth-teller would point to the liar, while the liar would falsely claim to be the truth-teller. It does not provide any information about which door leads to freedom.
